Adult Sunday School
Something’s happening in the rafters of our barn. Every Sunday morning, beginning at 9:30, between 15 and 25 adults of all stripes are climbing the stairs or riding the elevator up to the third floor to meet. It’s an Adult Religious Education class and each member is creating an individual theology. It turns out my disguise wasn’t necessary either, because
If you’re older than eighteen, you’re invited to participate. But be preparedthere is no teacher! Instead, everyone in attendance contributes from his or her own experiences, readings and thoughts. It seems the subject matter in the months that have ensued since its commencement in September, have included writing one’s own spiritual autobiography; discussing other liberal religions; delving into human nature and its place in the religious experience; defining one’s own ultimate reality; studying Unitarian Universalist church history; determining what is “holy”; considering the question “Is There Sin?”; evaluating good, evil and eschatology (the end of all things); and acknowledging and sharing ideas of justice.
It shows no signs of letting up. It appears that each Sunday’s lesson is self-contained which means there is no homework, so no one has an excuse for not coming, except their inability to get up a little earlier on Sunday mornings. Plus there’s childcare for those who need it and coffee for those who need that.
You can join the group any Sunday, so why not live on the wild side? Join the Adult Religious Education pre-worship service, mental exercising group. There is no telling where the discussion may take you.
On the first Sunday of each month, Bob Sandidge and Anne Ward will lead a discussion of Spiral Dynamics - come & learn what it is and how it applies to your life. Dan Hislip will facilitate the second and third Sundays. The topic will be The Bible. On the fourth and on the occasional fifth Sunday of each month the format for the Adult RE class will be a forum, moderated by Andrea Schmidlin. A chosen presenter will speak for 10-15 minutes on a topic previously published, followed by a moderated discussion. Please join us any Sunday at 9:30 am on the 3rd floor.
