YWCA of Elgin

Our youth have chosen the YWCA of Elgin Giving Tree as the recipient of our Share the Plate collection for December.  This year, instead of doing the shopping ourselves, we hope to raise $800 to be shared equitably among 17 children.  The YWCA staff and volunteers, who know the children well, will purchase and wrap gifts of clothing, books and toys according to each child’s wish list. YWCA Elgin is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for…

Ethnic Eating December Update

Put away your flowered shirts and the pool toys, our trip to the Caribbean is over. However, I think the 11 folks who went enjoyed the flavors and the community.  That brings us to December’s selection. As I previously said, I found a restaurant with foods of Albania. However, I also found the date I had proposed conflicted with some scheduled activities of some members, so we will now be attending Cafe Beograd on Saturday, December 3rd at 5 pm.…

Sunday, November 27, from 11:30am – 12pm Please separate your CLEAN food grade Styrofoam from your packaging Styrofoam and bag as needed.  Styrofoam peanuts are NOT accepted (take to UPS store).  Place your Styrofoam in the Prius with the open hatch in the church parking lot. Joe Masonick will be doing the collecting. We’ll drive it to Dart Container Corporation in North Aurora (open 24/7).  Please try to avoid using Styrofoam because its use is not sustainable. Many people manage to avoid…

How’s Religious Education (RE) going?

“How’s Religious Education (RE) going?” I get this question a lot, and it’s a tough one to answer. On the one hand, it’s been a wonderful couple of months with our Youth Group. I know you all know this already, but the Youth of UUCE are caring, smart, fascinating people and it’s a joy to get to spend time with them during RE Classes. Since we started meeting every other week again, they have spent time playing games and getting to…

Ethnic Eating

Another installment of Ethnic Eating will take place on Sunday the 13th when the group will sample of cuisine of the island nation of Anguilla.  For December, we will be visiting Cafe Beograd in Irving Park Road to try some Albanian fare. I am shooting for reservations on the 4th to avoid overlap with Christmas activities. If you have interest in joining us, please let me know at dwhislip@gmail.com.  Peace,Dan Hislip

Climate Voter Pledge from UU the Vote

Climate change is a complex problem. The ways we address it are varied and have different impacts, but all are crucial in addressing climate change. Voting on climate is a critical approach. Our communities are impacted by the climate crisis, but that doesn’t mean we’re powerless. By organizing our churches, neighborhoods, and communities, we build the power necessary to nurture healthy and resilient communities where all can thrive. Together, we can elect officials – from the local to federal levels…
