Shared Harvest Spring Potluck Picnic
UUCE members and friends of the church are invited to attend a Spring Potluck Picnic hosted by Shared Harvest Food Co-op on Saturday, May 13 from 11:00 a.m to 1:30 p.m., at UUCE. Bring a dish to share, enjoy good food, visit with Shared Harvest owner/members and supporters, and learn about their efforts to open a community-owned organic food co-op in Elgin. Tours of McQueen Station Farm will be available (register at picnic check in). The event will be held largely outdoors but…

Ethnic Eating At Barangaroos and May Date Change
By the time you read this, we will be a couple of days away from dining at Barangaroos Aussie Pies. It should be an interesting experience. In May, we will be targeting the country of Austria. As it happens sometimes, I did not consult the master schedule which is maintained by the Hislip household master (not me) so I must change the proposed date to Sunday, May 21st. On that date at 4:30 pm, we are dining at Heidi’s Fortune Pub at 2326 Hassell…
Elgin Pride: Save the Date!
UUCE is proud to support Elgin’s first ever Pride parade and festival on Saturday, June 3, 2023. Pride month and related annual events are celebrated globally, with its origins being the result of decades of LGBTQIA+ activism and organizing for equal rights. On June 28, 1970, on the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, the first Pride marches were held in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Thousands of LGBTQIA+ people gathered to commemorate Stonewall and demonstrate for equal rights. Elgin’s plans…
BRAVER/WISER, Courage and Compassion for Life as it is
Wondrous Beyond WordsJD Stillwater “Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement . . . get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. To be spiritual is to be amazed.”—Abraham Joshua Heschel Since the pandemic I’ve been growing vegetables on the flat roof of our garage, in big plastic tubs full of dirt. It’s convenient because deer can’t get up there. Rabbits, either, or wild turkeys. Squirrels can, and…
Ethnic Eating Update
The response for this month’s Ethnic Eating opportunity for sampling the cuisine of the Land Down Under has been, to say the least, UNDERwhelming. On the other hand, this means that there are plenty of seats available for dining at Barangaroos Aussie Pies at 3208 North Sheffield in Chicago on Sunday, April 23 at 4:30 for our next excursion. Please let me know at 847-243-3820 or dwhislip@gmail.com if you would like to join us.In May, the country of choice is Austria. As it…
PADS homeless shelter – Changes to our schedule
Hello, Friends, The UUCE commitment to provide lunches to the Elgin PADS homeless shelter is changing. Because of the limited number of volunteers, our church will now donate meals twice per month, instead of each Monday. We will plan on delivering, with the option of also serving, lunch on the first and third Mondays of each month, beginning in May. I encourage you to help on your own on the two or three Mondays not covered by our church. You would…
Fourth Sunday Styrofoam Collection April 23 and New Handouts
Please separate your CLEAN food grade Styrofoam from your packaging Styrofoam and bag as needed. Styrofoam peanuts are NOT accepted (take to UPS store). Place your Styrofoam in the Prius with the open hatch in the church parking lot between 11:30am and 12:00pm. Joe Masonick will be doing the collecting. We’ll drive it to Dart Container Corporation in North Aurora (open 24/7). Please try to avoid using Styrofoam because its use is not sustainable. Many people manage to avoid it; indeed, entire…
From the Board of Trustees
For this Letter from Leadership, the Board wanted to share a summary of the results of the recent congregational survey and give an overview of what we plan on doing with this information. Overall, we had 53 participants, which is a great response! Of course, there was a wide diversity of opinions reflective of our individualism. The survey was divided into 4 major areas: · Professional Minister · Building · Social Justice · Recommending the Church The summary below is…
Ethnic Eating April Date Change
Unfortunately, I have to backtrack on the ethnic eating date for April. The Cubs play at home on the 23rd and, since our restaurant is in the area, that would add traffic to the drive. The next weekend is crowded with activities which I would not like to conflict with but the first weekend in May is also a Cubs homestead. So we are going to shoot for 4:30 on Sunday, April 30 at Barangeroos Aussie Pies, 3208 N Sheffield…
