Church Picnic and Flower Communion

Hi there everyone, We’re just a few days from our church picnic taking place after the Flower Communion service on Sunday, June 11th – which means we need to place our catering order soon…which means we need you to RSVP (if you haven’t already).  We’re going to be ordering from Emily’s Mexican Grill (on McLean in Elgin) – so tacos (steak, Al Pastor, and veggie) and rice and beans and chips and salsa!  But, no RSVP = no food!  (I’m half…

Looking Back

At the start of the new year, it’s custom to take inventory of where you’re at in life. Did you reach last year’s goals? What new intentions are you setting for the coming year?As part of the worship team, I wanted to take a second to look back on where we were at this time last year compared to how far we’ve come. This time last year I delivered one of my very first sermons – an honest look at…

From the Worship Team

It was so great to see everyone who was able to attend our service last Sunday! We were blessed with a beautiful day and a healthy turnout for our first in-person service in 2022! Several people stayed to walk the labyrinth and place the stones Rowan provided, thanks Rowan!   I love spring! Buds are forming, grass is greening, and I rejoice in the rain! Ponds that looked doomed are teeming with life and the birds are singing happy songs. The…

From the Worship Team

At our Worship Team meeting earlier this month, someone asked an interesting, thought-provoking question: why do we use the word “worship” in our Sunday service (e.g. Call to Worship)? As a non-creedal religion, Unitarian Universalists don’t come together to worship a common god – so what is it that we’re worshiping? The question reminded me of a sermon Rev. Brosier gave years ago that…

From Our Worship Team

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been asked a few times how the Worship Team is doing with the recent changes in leadership. For the first time in the history of our congregation, we are a lay-led church and the responsibility for Sunday services now lies squarely on the volunteers on the team. The good news is that we have an excellent team with a wide variety of thoughts, ideas, spiritualities, and heart-felt issues and causes. We last met on…

Rev. Michael Dowd, July 18th

On July 18th, Rev. Michael Dowd will be our guest.  Since April 2002, Michael and his wife (UU science writer and fellow climate activist Connie Barlow) have traveled North America delivering talks in some 500 UU congregations, summer camps, and minister retreats, as well as for other religious and secular groups.  Their pro-science, pro-future ministry was featured as the cover story of our national membership magazine, UU World, in the spring of 2006. They’ve also been featured in major media throughout…
