This month’s Share the Plate recipient is
Public Action to Deliver Shelter (PADS)
PADS works to meet the basic needs of homeless individuals first. They provide a safe place to sleep, eat meals, take showers, and do their laundry. The next step is to provide comprehensive case management.
Case managers meet with each guest and together, an action plan is created by identifying the barriers which led to the person becoming homeless. Action plans are tailored to each individual and may include money management, life skills, assistance with securing a GED, housing searches or referrals to outside services such as substance abuse or mental health counseling.
In their last fiscal year, they provided 13,611 nights of shelter and 38,111 meals to 302 unduplicated men, women and children.
Help Needed
For two years UUCE has been providing volunteers who prepare lunches for clients and staff at PADS every Monday, even throughout the pandemic. We want to thank Tom Durkin for organizing our calendar with a Sign-Up Genius tool to ensure continuous coordinated service.
At this time, Tom is seeking someone to take over this coordinator responsibility. Soon it will be safe to resume serving lunches inside the PADS facility, allowing personal contact with residents of PADS. Our volunteers will shop for and prepare food, some may offer to serve what others have prepared, and anyone who buys food can get reimbursed by the church for the cost of their groceries. Please consider volunteering for this very worthy local program, and donate money to UUCE on behalf of PADS in order to pay for the food we give them. Thank you!
