Woman of Power and Standing

Maya Soetoro-Ng, Barack Obama’s half-sister, works with my wife Deborah on education and justice projects in Hawaii, and sent her this video today: “The Women Are Coming

The first part of this video is a sequence of the images of the world’s current female heads of state, followed by 28 images of U.S. women of power and standing, ending with the young poet Amanda Gorman.

You may have some names you would like to add. Mila suggested Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who is standing firm against the insurrectionist-wannabe kidnappers/assassins. I would add just-reelected California Rep. Katie Porter, whose questionings in hearings makes strong men quake, whimper, and give in. It’s one of the most satisfying shows on Earth. YouTube has lots of videos of Ms. Porter’s fearless person and razor-sharp mind. Here’s a complete historical list of female heads of state, which will remind you of many others, like Violette Chamorro of Nicaragua, and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia.

My next Service will be Roots of Our Faith: Humanism, on Feb. 7. It will tie together with my suggestion last week that we play God more.
